Jan has taught for the BFI in various regional art cinemas, offering courses in westerns, Vietnam war films, costume drama and Australian/New Zealand cinema. Her first book, American Science Fiction TV: Star Trek, Stargate and Beyond won a prestigious “Outstanding Academic Title” Award from the American Library Association’s Choice Review in 2006.

Her current research concerns the role and significance of duty, honour and loyalty in the military, concentrating upon the character of Richard Sharpe from the immensely successful Bernard Cornwell novels and Carlton television series. She is also gathering material for Hostile Waters, a book about submarines in film. Mostly recently she contributed to Yvonne Tasker’s collection Fifty Hollywood Directors (Routledge, 2014), discussing the work of Roger Corman.
